Introduction to sheep farming

Small producers rear sheep to produce meat and other products, such as wool, and raise lambs for breeding. Sheep can be combined with other types of farming, and the scale of flocks varies widely.

Sheep farming is a form of livestock management and comes with legal responsibilities on caring for the animals’ welfare throughout the year. Managing flock health is a critical part of sheep farming, and to sell meat you will also need to comply with food safety regulations.

Before purchasing a flock, you must learn in practice how to manage sheep and care for their welfare in all weather conditions. It is a good idea to get training that has a formal certification. As a starting point, you can look at Lantra’s courses or contact the National Sheep Association.
