Registering your herd

Scottish cattle keepers must register all cattle births, deaths, and movements (on/off) with ScotEID using the ScotMoves+ system. Births must be registered within 27 days. Movements must be recorded in the holding register within 48 hours, and reported centrally to ScotEID within 3 days. A County Parish Holding (CPH) number from the Scottish Government Rural Payments and Inspections Division (RPID) and a herd mark from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) are required to get started

If any of your personal details change during keepership (such as your address, telephone number or email address) you must notify RPID, APHA and ScotEID.

De-registration is as important as registration. Within 30 days of ceasing to keep animals on a holding you must notify RPID, APHA and ScotEID.

Key Cattle Registration & Recording Requirements

  • Birth Registration: All calves must be tagged with two approved tags (one primary) within 20 days (36 hours for 1st tag in dairy). Notify ScotEID within 27 days of birth
  • Movements & Deaths: All movements (purchases, sales, off-site grazings) must be recorded in the holding register within 48 hours, and reported to ScotEID within 3 days. Deaths must be reported within 7 days.
  • ScotMoves (Within Business Moves): For moving cattle between holdings within the same business, use the ScotMoves system. By doing so, the cattle passport does not need to be updated. If you do not wish to use ScotMoves, you can continue to report all moves through ScotEID, or you can, where possible, amalgamate all land you use on a permanent or long term basis that is within the 5 mile CPH rules
  • Holding Register: You must maintain an up-to-date, accurate holding register (herd register) on-farm for 10 years.
