If you want to put up new buildings to run your enterprise, you will need the go-ahead from the local authority. Currently, if your proposed structure is for agricultural purposes and is under 465m2 then you don’t usually need full planning permission.
You may however need to notify the local authority of your plan and get approval – this is called agricultural prior notification and you need to allow at least 28 days for your notification to be considered.
However, if your holding is very small (under 0.4ha) or the new building would be close to a road or to neighbours then you may need planning permission.
The size limit is likely to be extended to 1000m2 following an earlier consultation.
