Irrigation

You probably water your crops, more frequently if you are growing under cover. There is a risk – especially with crops which are eaten raw such as salads – of contaminating your crops with your irrigation water.

Mains water is the safest. However, if you have a private water supply such as a pond or a stream or you collect and store rainwater there is a risk of bacterial contamination. Food Standards Scotland provide a useful risk assessment for irrigation water.
